Can electricians come inspect electrical work in a finished house to make sure everything was done right?

We recently remodeled our home and our handyman brought in an electrician to wire our new recessed lights. The recessed lights were the remodel variety and went under the floorboards in our attic. The floorboards were pulled to do the wiring job then put back down when the lights were installed. When the handyman was putting the floorboards back down, one of the recessed light bulbs blew. The handyman put in a new bulb and it blew too. The person who witnessed it said it seemed to spark when it blew.

My wife is now nervous about all the wiring in the house. Our handyman is going to check the one recessed light to see what the problem is. We’d like to have an independent certified electrician come out and do a general inspection of our electricity to make sure there aren’t any major problems.

Do you recommend this? Is it possible to check the electricity even though the wiring is under floors and behind walls? How much would something like this cost?

Thanks!

Have a qualified professional electrician make the needed repairs. The local AHJ should make the inspection and your handyman should stand the expense of having the electrical repairs made to the work he did. Live and learn that a cheap bid does not mean inexpensive. When you hire a pro, you get the expertise that means these type of problems if they happen at all get fixed when they are found.

you can have an electrician come look. They should be able to meter the outlets and look at junction boxes etc and tell if any thing is wrong. If your only losing one light, it may be in the light as they are all or should be on the same circuit. Check around and make sure you find a reputable electrician in the area. Also remember no two electricians seem to agree. As far as price, it just depends on the electrician.

They don’t do inspections, but can assess the problem and fix it. Inspectors inspect. Electricians install and repair.

My question is did the handyman bring in an electrician from a contractor or one that was a friend claiming to be qualified.

By all means call an electrical contractor to check it. Definitely sounds like a wiring problem, but i have seen cheap bulbs cause problems too. I wouldn’t be surprise to see a loose connection somewhere.

Just pray the handyman didn’t hit the wires with a nail or screw in which case both the electrician and handyman are incompetent.

It is a very good idea to do so.You can pay one to do so.

Sounds like when they were putting the attic floorboards back down they drove a nail into one of the wires to that fixture. That wire will need to be properly repaired or replaced. The question this brings to mind is if the entire wiring job routed the wires properly so they would not have anything resting on them or interfering with them. Any inspection would require pulling up the floorboards again. Other than that, an electrical inspection is normally done at the load center and at the outlets and switches.
