Any tips on how to reduce my electricity bill?

We don’t leave lights/ large appliances on uneccesarrily. Will switching the power off from the power socket for small items like the toaster, kettle, playstation, wii, TV and radio in bedroom save much money on my electricity bill? Also, if I do switch these things off, do appliances still consume some electricity when plugged in but still switched on at mains? Will it make much difference to unplug them completely or just switch off from power socket- will even that make much difference to our bill?

    cut down on time – only use the tv for programs you really want to watch, only listen to the stereo if you cant stand silence (sing if you’re that bothered lol)
    and you could always make a habit of turning the electricity off for you’re whole home at night, to make sure you’re not wasting any.
    you could also cut down on your heating bill if you’re strapped for cash, i turn mine off when i leave the house and at night

    There are many ways to save electricity. Electrical currents are active in anything that is plugged into the electrical outlets, whether they are being used or not. So, use a Smart Strip. A smart strip is a power strip with several electrical outlets which has a main switch to cut the power to everything that is plugged into the power strip. Use a Smart Strip in the kitchen for your toaster, microwave, coffee maker and other small appliances. Turn the strip on only when you use one of these appliances and then switch it off.
    Another big money saver is to unplug any devices used to recharge
    batteries when not is use. A cell phone charger that is plugged in all of the time is costing you money (approx. $4.00/month). And a big energy saver would be to turn your computer off when not in use and to unplug your printer, as well. These things are costing you money just by being plugged into the outlet, drawing a current 24/7.
    Use the air dry setting on your dishwasher. Use only cold water for laundry. Use a clothes line to dry your clothing or only use the dryer to partially dry your clothing and hang to dry the rest of the way.
    Use the energy efficient light bulbs. Take shorter showers. A bath tub holds much more water than would be used in a short shower.
    Watch television in the dark. Put the TV and any electronic components on a Smart Strip and turn it off when not in use. Turn your heat down at night and when you are not home. And, obviously, turn the lights off behind you. I burn a candle in my kitchen sink so a quick trip into the kitchen does not turn on the three bulb light fixture.
    People believe that if you use electricity in the ‘off’ hours of the day/night that they are saving electricity. That is not true at all. You do not save a penny, the electricity company does. Look at your bill, you are not charged two different kilowatt rates according to the time of day you use electricity. My two sons and I did all of the above beginning on the first day of our billing cycle and, we saved $40.00 in one month. When we got our bill, we were amazed. I then gave each of my sons $20.00 as a reward for saving me money. THEN, I told them if the electric bill goes up again, you owe me $20.00 per month.
    A lesson learned, indeed.

    A big one is the dishwasher. Don’t use "heat dry". I just open the d/w after the cycle is done and let them air dry. Also, how are your house and water heated? If the water heater is electric, turn it down so that you’re not producing more hot water then you need. if you have electric heat you want to seal any leaks you have around doors and windows and make sure that your fireplace vent is shut if it’s not in use.

    First off the power strip info is correct 100%, but there is another thing that you can do that should reduce your bill by at least 33% or more. You would need to go to say Wall-Mart , and purchase an APPLIANCE timer, not a cheap one for lights. They generally are less then 20.00. Next, you would set it to turn off the power at midnight and comeback on about 6AM and then the biggie, you use it to control your fridge. Your fridge runs usually 30 min on and 30 min off 24 hours a day. Of course you would not want to open it up and leave the door open at night while you decide what you would want to munch on,, as then your food could spoil. But, in doing this, you save about 3 hours per day elect .usuage not needed and then when you multply that by an average of 30 days a month, you will save about 90 hours of elec. usage by one of your heaviest wasters of electricity in your home. Another thing, is that if you have an older model fridge, you may want to consider getting a new one as the newer ones use far less elect. then the older ones. I purchased a 20.5 cubic ft. Hotpoint Double door from Home Depot 2 years ago for 400.00 plus tax. It only uses about 5.5 amps of elect. compared to some of the older ones that use almost 20 amps. No ice maker or water dispenser which are also power wasters. Contact me if you want to learn more. I have been totally living off the grid for over 16 years now on Solar Elect. Rock

    Change all your light bulbs to the energy saving ones. That’ll cut your bill by 50%. If you’re replacing your appliances, replace them with energy star ones.

    You can even make your own electricity, Some people, especially those in remote areas, use the electricity from their systems in place of electricity supplied to them by power providers (i.e., electric utilities). These are called stand-alone (off-grid) systems.

    These are some renewable energy technologies available for use today:

    * Small solar electric systems
    * Small wind electric systems
    * Microhydropower systems
    * Small hybrid electric systems (solar and wind).
